Improvisation as a tool for creative expression in an adolescent community
Abstract:
Montessori and improv share the principle of bringing the brain to its highest functioning by fostering empathy, gratitude, and narrative storytelling. Besides this great brain science, improvisation is simply fun to participate and experience together! In this interactive and hands-on workshop, adolescent guides were introduced to the basic tenets of theatrical improvisation and how this playful art form supports Montessori pedagogy and the adolescent's urge for self and creative expression. Attendees participated in large and small group activities which could be immediately applied to the classroom. Improv techniques were linked to executive functioning, brain integration, and group collaboration.
