Reading & Writing:
creating a culture of big work

Want to cultivate a Culture of Big Work centered on reading, writing and research for all children in the elementary class? This training will provide strategies and hands-on activities to engage ALL students—from emerging readers and writers to those who finish first and crave more challenge. Extensive follow-up choices and cross-curricular research will spark engagement for both high-flyers AND steady climbers. But how to do this with everything else we have going on? Big Work IS the thing that allows everything else to happen. Two experienced elementary guide coaches will facilitate the training, but learning will happen with the contribution of everyone in the training.

Purpose & Intention

This workshop is intended for Montessori educators who are working with elementary aged students, from lead-guides to support staff, who would like to be inspired on what is possible for all ability levels, how to manage and sustain a Culture of Big Work, and how to integrate topics for maximum cross-curricular experiences.

Course Description

This training is intended for new and experienced elementary Montessori educators (leads and support), who would like to connect with others and expand on their experience of what is possible. Topics include:

  • The elementary child and definition of Big Work

  • Reading and writing as tools of thinking

  • Vertical and horizontal curricular planning

  • Systems for managing multiple independent projects

  • Examples of every step of the research and Big Work process to bring variety and an individualized approach:

    • Spark​​

    • Resources

    • Research

    • Note taking

    • Documenting

    • Editing

    • Visuals and concrete artifacts

    • Associated sensorial work and experience

    • Presenting for communication
